Getting YOU to Work: Free travel for jobseekers in George

You can use multiple buses on one trip

GO GEORGE is proud to partner with the Western Cape Government on the Getting YOU to Work Programme, a Jobseeker Travel Voucher initiative that helps unemployed jobseekers travel for free to access work opportunities.

Transport costs are one of the biggest barriers to employment. This programme removes that barrier by enabling eligible jobseekers in George to use GO GEORGE buses at no cost while looking for work.

What is the Getting YOU to Work programme?

The Getting YOU to Work programme provides free weekday travel to unemployed jobseekers so they can get to job interviews and work opportunities In George, the programme is delivered in partnership with GO GEORGE. The travel voucher can be accessed Monday to Friday, between 09:00 and 15:00.

Who can apply?

To qualify, jobseekers must:

  • Be unemployed
  • Have a valid South African ID
  • Be registered on the online Getting YOU to Work portal

How to get started

  • Visit gettingyoutowork.westerncape.gov.za
  • Click Jobseeker Registration
  • Select GO GEORGE as your transport option
  • Complete the registration process and you will receive an SMS confirming your registration.
  • Take your South African ID to a GO GEORGE kiosk to collect your FREE Smart Card.
  • Use your card to travel for free on GO GEORGE buses while looking for work.

What do you receive?

Eligible jobseekers in George receive a GO GEORGE Smart Card with 6 preloaded trips (once-off), which allows free travel on GO GEORGE buses Monday to Friday, between 09:00 and 15:00.

Staff at collection points will assist if you need help.

Where can I collect my card?

Please collect your Smart Card at a GO GEORGE Kiosk. Visit the Travel Cost page for location of kiosks or contact Customer Care on 0800 044 044 for details.

Information for employers, NGOs and NPOs

Employers and organisations can support unemployed jobseekers by registering on the Getting YOU to Work portal and issuing free travel vouchers to potential candidates.

Organisations must:

  • Be registered with CIPC, or the Department of Social Development (NGO’s and NPOs), or a government entity
  • Actively recruit or support unemployed jobseekers
  • Register at: gettingyoutowork.westerncape.gov.za and select Company Registration.
