Major upgrades of several roads in George will impact on road users and the GO GEORGE bus service for the next few months. The upgrades will be spread over a period of time, with work commencing in Courtenay Street first during May, and expected to be done by the end of July 2018.
Courtenay Street will be upgraded from the railway bridge to the York Street circle. Phase one comprises work on the outer lanes in both directions, followed by a new wearing course placed over all four lanes during phase two. The impact on traffic will be minimal during the day, since only a section of one lane will be closed overnight from 18:00 until 06:00.
Temporary bus stops
Temporary bus stops will be provided when required during this period. Evening bus traffic in Courtenay Street should not be disrupted in a serious way, but GO GEORGE passenger service staff will be at affected bus stops to guide passengers to the temporary stops. These will be clearly indicated by yellow temporary stop signs.
Drive with caution
There may be a 30 mm road surface difference between sections during the first phase of the project. Road users are alerted to take care when changing lanes, and also under wet conditions when the phase one road surface will be more slippery. The George Municipality apologises for the inconvenience and appeals to road users to be patient and exercise caution near roadworks.
