George Municipality confirms that a GO GEORGE minibus was involved in an accident with a private vehicle last night. South African Police Services are investigating the incident. GO GEORGE confirms that no passengers were on board at the time of the incident, but that both George Link drivers sustained light injuries and were released after treatment at George MediClinic last night.
According to a statement released last night by the SAPS Southern Cape spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie, the accident happened at about 20:15 at the traffic light crossing at Delville Park/Rosedale and Beach Road.
“It is alleged that a black Golf that was travelling towards town, jumped a red traffic light and collided with the side of the GO GEORGE minibus. The bus was crossing Beach Road from Rosedale into Dellville Park when it overturned due to the excessive impact. The female driver and her co-driver sustained injuries to their neck and back respectively. They were taken to hospital for medical treatment. The driver of the Golf and his passenger, both men, were transported to hospital per ambulance, both in a serious condition, where the driver later passed on,” Pojie said.
George Executive Mayor, Alderman Charles Standers, expressed the city’s sympathies with the family of the deceased. “We sincerely regret this very sad incident and our thoughts are with everybody involved, including the traumatised bus drivers,” he said, and once again appealed to the community to drive safely and considerate towards all road users.
The directors of George Link, the bus operating company, confirmed this morning that both bus drivers are stable, though shocked. “We are immensely relieved that our two employees have not sustained serious injuries and that there were no passengers on board at the time,” they said.
