The new GO GEORGE Smart Card system has gone live on 15 November 2018 with the concession that any remaining paper tickets could still be used for one month before the old tickets would be phased out completely.
From Saturday 15 December 2018, the only accepted forms of payment for trips will be the GO GEORGE Smart Card, and for those who do not have a Smart Card, cash for a trip bought on the bus.
The current price of a cash trip is R12 and passengers are requested to keep the right amount of cash ready when boarding. However, it is faster to just tap the Smart Card and board, which contributes to the system staying on schedule, so passengers are encouraged to buy cards if they have not done so yet. The more passengers use Smart Cards, the sooner everybody will enjoy the benefits of the new automated system.
A first Smart Card still costs only R20, including two pre-loaded trips, if a person can show a valid form of identity such as an ID card or book, passport, driver’s licence or birth certificate, or a copy thereof. People are allowed to buy cards for others at this same special price, providing they bring along proof of their identification. Without identification, cards can be bought at the normal price of R40, no trips included.
For any enquiries about the location of Smart Card mobile vehicles, kiosks and top-up vendors or how to use the card, phone the GO GEORGE Call Centre on 0800 044 044.
